Center for Excellence in Cancer and Vascular Research opened at the Rappaport Institute
1 October, 2002
The Rappaport Institute has recently inaugurated a Center for Excellence for Cancer and Vascular Research in the Rappaport Medical Sciences Building. With an investment of some 2 million dollars towards its establishment, the center will bring together leading researchers, each one specializing in a different but related field:
Prof. Aaron Ciechanover focuses on research of the ubiquitin system, which regulates the planned degradation of cells, examining why the system shuts down in the case of cancer cells, and how it can be reactivated.
Prof. Israel Vlodavsky is studying the enzyme heparanase which is a key element in the system that promotes tumor metastasis.
Prof. Gera Neufeld investigating the system that creates blood vessels. Within this framework he is examining how to prevent the development of blood vessels vital to the development of malignant tumors.
The incorporation of these senior researchers in this unique Center of Excellence will foster synergy and promote understanding of the developmental mechanisms as disease pathogenesis.
