Professor Itskovitz-Eldor is also the Director of the  Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rambam Medical Center and head of the Rambam-Rambam-Technion Stem Cell Research Center.  He is one of the leading stem cell researchers worldwide and has been responsible for important scientific breakthroughs in this field.  In 1998 Prof. Itskovitz-Eldor established the first academic research laboratory in the world for the scientific investigation of human embryonic stem cells, at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa, Israel.  His  laboratory generated the first, and currently the only, human embryonic stem cell line which is produced in Israel and he is the only Israeli investigator to have been invited to set up a training laboratory at the  N.I.H. as a national and international training resource.
