Noam Sobel, Weizmann Institute of Science

The Rappaport Prize in Biomedical Sciences for 2012 in the category of Young Investigator is awarded to Professor Noam Sobel of the Weizmann Institute of Science. The Prize is conferred in recognition of Professor Noam Sobel's work in uncovering brain mechanisms of smell perception, and applications which harness these mechanisms in the breakthrough development of devices which enable individuals with extreme neurological disabilities to control a computer, communicate with their environment, and even drive an electric wheelchair. It is this unique combination of basic science insights, together with rapid and innovative translation into clinically useful applications for the benefit of human health, which constitutes the basis for awarding Noam Sobel with the Rappaport Biomedical Sciences Prize for 2012 in the Young Investigator category.
