Institute members Professor Avram Hershko and Professor Aaron Ciechanover were awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, together with Professor Irwin Rose of the United States – for their discovery of the ubiquitin-mediated proteolytic pathway.

The Nobel Prize award follows a long series of prior prizes and awards in recognition of this most seminal discovery.

The “story” of the discovery of the ubiquitin pathway, one of the most fundamental and widely distributed pathways for regulation of all aspects of cellular function and exciting recent applications to health and treatment of disease, represents the most gratifying expression of the goals of the Rappaport Institute, as enunciated by the Rappaport Family and the Technion.

Professors Hershko and Ciechanover have been members of the Rappaport Institute since its inception and continue to serve as role models for active day-to-day involvement in biomedical research and contribute actively to the scientific life of the Rappaport Institute.

The Rappaport Institute is proud to serve as the adjudicatory and administration body on behalf of the Rappaport Foundation, in the awarding of two annual prizes to Israeli scientists for biomedical research excellence (http://www.rappaport-prize.org.il). The annual prizes are in the categories of:

  • Investigator with proven scientific achievements
  • Promising young investigator.

The winners in 2012 were: Professor David Wallach and Professor Noam Sobel.
The winners in 2013 were: Professor Hagai Bergman and Dr. Jacob Hanna
